Hailey and I took the kids out to Orlando for a Disney World trip this past week and had a great time. We have tried to always take the kids with us when going out of town, or at least as frequent as we can and we realized this time how much easier it has become at their current ages. Hailey left about 12 hours before me as I had to get work done and she took Ady and Max. She said they were the easiest ever to fly with. I took Lucy late that night and she did not sleep once, but she was great. I did not even have the car seat to strap her into as it would not fit so we gate checked it. I am not sure exactly why I share all this other than their current ages really allowed us to enjoy this family trip a ton! </div>

<br />
<br />
Walking around Disney with 3 kids is no easy task at any age. The weather was great, we all got sun burnt and thank Heaven for the Disney stroller rental. Oh on a side note for anyone thinking about a trip to Disney World as opposed to Disneyland. I would not suggest the extra money for the park hopper if you have kids under 9-10 yrs old. We thought we would get to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, etc but these parks are not like in California where you can just walk to them quickly. To get from one park to the next you have to take shuttles etc and it is very time consuming not to mention most of what young kids want to see is at Magic Kingdom. So there, that is my money and time saving advice for anyone thinking about Disney World<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In late February Hailey and I had the opportunity to sneak away for a quick weekend of sun and relaxing down to beautiful Cabo, Mexico. Most people do not realize that you can get their direct from Salt Lake and it takes just a bit over 2 hours! We had a great time just relaxing and spending some time together. We try to take our kids with us as much as we can when we go out of town, but I have to say, this time it was quite nice to just have some adult time!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Last weekend we took the kiddos skiing in Park City and hung out all day with the Desatoff family. We went skiing at the Park City mountain resort and had such a fun time. At first the kids, especially Adyson, were a bit overwhelmed by the difference in size between the Park City Resort and where they normally go at Sundance. After a run or two it was much better. There was one hill/run that was over 3 miles long! Can you imagine? I thought it was awesome to see how cousin Sophie played the roll of oldest cousin and I was so impressed with how kind and supportive she was being to Ady while Ady was struggling at first. Way to go Sophie! We had dinner with Mariah and Danny and all the kids later that night at a local sushi bar.</div>

The night before we went skiing we actually stayed in Deer Valley with the kids and they just loved all camping out in a room together. You forget how cool the kids think it is to be laid out all over the floor in the same room with mom and dad. They loved roasting marshmallows and making Smores too. We had a great time.<br />

<br />
Both Ady and Max had science fairs this past month. I was able to attend Adyson's project and Hailey went to support Max. What was really cool is that Ady and her class did something very similar to the project I did while I grade school. Her class was trying to determine which soil types filtered water the best and also how to create wells to get water out from the ground. I was very impressed with her and Hailey said Max did a great job too.<br />
<br />
Ady continues to want to be in the kitchen as much as she can. It is a daily request to help with dinner or make something. She made the famous Smoot Family Flavor All the other day (similar to a home made ranch dressing) and here below she wanted to make cookies from scratch. They turned out very tasty.<br />

Grandma Sue was in town the final week of February and is still here until tomorrow. She has been spending lots of quality time with the grandkids. My sister Lisa has been talking up the waffle luv truck so I thought I would take my mom while she was in town and she loved them. Here is a <a href="http://www.waffluv.com/" target="_blank">link to their site</a>. <br />

Adyson has begun dance competition season and the two pics below are of that. My sister Lisa brought all her kids (4 of them) with the help of my mom, over to Thanksgiving point to support Ady. It was so awesome to see, Easton, Zach and Max all staring and oohing and awwing as the girls danced. You would have thought they were more interested in Dance than a video game. Anyway we are so proud of Ady, she took first place in her division both on her solo and team dance. Way to go Ady.<br />

After she was done skiing the Jodeeh Harris brought her back from Sundance to her house or she met up with Lucy and the girls and they had an American girl tea party which was very fun for them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Speaking of growing up little Max continues to be a bit crazy at times but he brings so much fun and energy to our home. Just last night he and Lucy were wrestling when he fell backwards and nailed his head on the side corner of an ottoman. You should have seen how loud he was yelling and how read his face turned. It scared me and him a little bit when the back of his head had a big knot in it but it was gone the next morning so that was our excitement with Max last night. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lucy is currently in this phase where she only wants to wear one gnarled up old and dirty white princess dress. She continues to believe that she truly is Elsa from the Disney movie frozen. And she wants to put this dress on the moment she wakes up and she wants to put it on the moment she comes home from school and she wants to wear at any time we go out and did I mention she also wants to sleep in it? </div>
<div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This sushi was great!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /></div>
<div>
This past weekend Hailey and I went to the Bailey's home on Saturday to watch the UFC fight and have a sushi chef make sushi at their home. The sushi was very fresh and the chef did a great job of preparing it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Super Bowl of course was on Sunday and it was the Denver broncos versus the Seattle Seahawks and was one of the biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history. The game was actually pretty boring but it was fun to relax around the house. While Max and I watched the Super Bowl Hailey, Lucy and Adyson made a hair salon and did each other's nails. The boys did boy stuff and the girls of course were doing girl stuff. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Work continues to go well and I believe we have close to 90 loans in processing at the start of this week and the goal is to be over 120 or 130 loans by the end of this week. It has been a much larger task then I initially thought it would be but we are also growing and progressing at a faster pace than I was hoping for. So all and all starting my own mortgage company has been a very good thing that's far.</div>

Well I had a new year's resolution to try and post a weekly family blog and am very close to 3 weeks behind. Time is flying by and there is a ton going on. Ill do my best to summarize the Kandell's happenings from the past couple of weeks.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Skiing with the speedster Max is always fun</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /></div>
<div>
The weekends have pretty much consisted of non stop skiing up at <a href="http://www.sundanceresort.com/" target="_blank">Sundance</a>. Even little Lucy has gotten in on the action. It's so much fun to ski with the kids. They just love it. Max is a speed freak and just wants to dive bomb the hills as fast as he can. Adyson takes her time and does her turns and is cautious. This past weekend we even got Hailey up on the mountain and she had not been skiing in 15 yrs. it really is great to be out in the mountains as a family laughing, skiing, eating and whatever else. We are certainly looking forward to the rest if the winter season.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition to skiing we have, well I have at least. Really enjoyed our church starting at 9 am again. It just seems like the days allow for more family time, get togethers and sheer relaxing. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The kids, Ady and Max have started robotics class once a week after school and seem to really like that too. Ady is in the heart of dance performance time so she is keeping way busy with that. <br />
<br />
As you may have seen in the top picture, we spent one evening up in <a href="http://www.icecastles.com/midway/" target="_blank">Midway at the Ice Caves</a> and this was so cool. The Midway Ice Caves are particularly awesome this year due to the hit Disney Movie, Frozen. They have all these kids believing that Elsa made the ice castles.</div>
<div>

Where has the time gone? Where has the past year gone? I cannot believe how fast time just keeps on going. The only reason I am even finding time right now is because Hailey and I are sitting on an airplane on our way back to Utah. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RTzoFUFdbyo/UreV1zKwxMI/AAAAAAAAAZY/WeILkDCJq88/s640/blogger-image-689106933.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RTzoFUFdbyo/UreV1zKwxMI/AAAAAAAAAZY/WeILkDCJq88/s640/blogger-image-689106933.jpg"></a></div><div><br></div><div>We visited Chicago for a couple of days to celebrate my birthday and to do some last minute shopping. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hnny-Gm3rIg/UreV_ZtzlHI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/Ks8BrWUKgpk/s640/blogger-image--233977682.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hnny-Gm3rIg/UreV_ZtzlHI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/Ks8BrWUKgpk/s640/blogger-image--233977682.jpg"></a></div>With the ease of shopping online these days it was actually really nice to spend some time getting stuff for the kids together. It really helps to put you in the Christmas spirit being all bundled up in a city in the cold and just thinking about your kids and the time of year and kind of putting everything else on hold for a bit.<br>
<br>
Putting things on hold has been tough the past few months. One of our biggest pieces of information is that I left a mortgage company that I was part of for well over 6 years and have now started my own company. Though this is very exciting, it has come with lots of work and effort and I am sure it will be that way for some time. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JktuEeC57iw/UreVqfnrfyI/AAAAAAAAAYg/BNSLmzklvPA/s640/blogger-image--1813957945.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JktuEeC57iw/UreVqfnrfyI/AAAAAAAAAYg/BNSLmzklvPA/s640/blogger-image--1813957945.jpg"></a></div></div><div>The name of the new company is United Military Mortgage and well, just keep your eyes and ears open because it is going places. Well, at least I hope so.<br>
<br>
So this is our family blog so I want to keep it to that. We celebrated Thanksgiving this year in our home in American Fork, though we normally head down to St George when it is the Kandell's year. We had a 40th birthday party to attend for my cousin Weston out in California the day after Thanksgiving so it was easier to stay in AF this year. Hailey did an amazing job setting the scene for a fun and festive Thanksgiving. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yqFGa-FkatA/UreVvBdv9ZI/AAAAAAAAAY4/-bJO4IuSWwg/s640/blogger-image-2083756417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yqFGa-FkatA/UreVvBdv9ZI/AAAAAAAAAY4/-bJO4IuSWwg/s640/blogger-image-2083756417.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div> The Lovell cousins came over and believe it or not, we even all got in the swimming pool. We were not in for long, but did spend some time in the hot tub.<br>
<br>
Grandpa and Grandma Kandell were in town and Grandma Sue had all sorts of arts and crafts for the kiddos which was nice because it kept them all occupied for quite some time.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N_7-wGZ5Ffc/UreV5vO27WI/AAAAAAAAAZo/aDVHtnuhavM/s640/blogger-image-2086526806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N_7-wGZ5Ffc/UreV5vO27WI/AAAAAAAAAZo/aDVHtnuhavM/s640/blogger-image-2086526806.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div> Grandpa Jim and I loved spending time cooking and we smoked a turkey and fried one too! There was certainly no shortage of food this year. Hailey made her famous sweet creamed corn, Lisa did rolls and a brussel sprouts and well who knows, we sure ate well though.<br>
<br>
Like I mentioned, Hailey and I flew out to California the Friday after Thanksgiving to celebrate the 40th birthday of my cousin Weston and that was a blast. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tlGp4NU61wU/UreV32dlaFI/AAAAAAAAAZg/RtBVvuh-y7k/s640/blogger-image--1220715009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tlGp4NU61wU/UreV32dlaFI/AAAAAAAAAZg/RtBVvuh-y7k/s640/blogger-image--1220715009.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div><div><br></div><div>We stayed at the Michels home in Encino and it was so much fun and brought back many great memories for me. When I was first in college and had met Cat, now Weston's wife, I had the opportunity to visit that home many times and it is always so much fun.<br>
<br>
Some other things we have been up to the past month or two are:<br>

Christmas tree decorating in the kids rooms<br>
<br>
I am totally wishing I had made the time to write once a week like I had been doing so well for a while and who knows, this may be a new year's resolution so that in 2014 I can do much better at writing and documenting what we are up to. It is always so much fun to go back and read.<br>

To be honest, it is not like I have not been super busy, well WE ALL HAVE, so it has not been easy to find the time to share with you all.<br />
<br />
Thanks to technology I have scrolled back in my Iphone camera to try and remember all we have been doing.<br />
<br />
My very last post was our quick little jaunt down to St George and per the camera roll in my phone here is a bulleted list of all we have been up to.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>pulling all the edible and salvageable goodies out of our garden</li>
<li>newly discovered Lucy video interviews</li>
<li>getting in the Halloween spirit at Cornbellys</li>
<li>Sunday hikes</li>
<li>Carving pumpkins </li>
<li>a family trip to Punta Mita</li>
<li>Max and Daddy BYU football game</li>
</ul>
<br />
I will share a little blurb on each of these with you now. <br />
<br />
Pulling all the edible and salvageable goodies out of our garden<br />

</tbody></table>
Our family garden was very plentiful this summer and as the fall has approached we have had to put sheets over the veggies (just the tomatoes) and we were able to extend the season. We picked enough basil that we have bags and bags of pesto and we also roasted tons of tomatoes and froze them along with the pesto. We are hoping for some gardeny goodness all winter long.</div>

As fall has set in we have made a kind of Sunday tradition of driving up the canyon toward the Draper temple and we found a hiking trail off the side of the road and the kids have loved it. One week it was cold, cloudy and rainy but this past Sunday it was beautiful.<br />

We had a family home evening one monday at the Lovell's house and aunt Lisa did a family home evening lesson on the harmful effects of telling lies and Hailey and I brought pumpkins to have the kids carve. It was a really fun time and we took seeds home and cooked them up and they were all eaten up within the next day. <br />

The highlight of October, at least as of now is our family and friends trip to beautiful Punta Mita Mexico. This is the same house we went to last Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma Kandell. We love it so much we went back and this time took two other families with us. We went with the Harris family and the Noble family. It was awesome to have so many kids to entertain each other and we parents had a blast too. The food was great, the house as comfortable and relaxing as always and we had great weather too. I feel like Punta Mita will be one of those destinations we will make a family traditional trip/vacation full of memories.<br />

Max and I went to the BYU vs Boise State game and had a great time. Here we are in the cougar store getting our gear on! Max loved that little ball we bought and we threw it and played catch under the stadium at half time and he thought that was the highlight as there were so many other "older" boys doing it too. He now wants to go back with his cousins Easton and Zach since they know how to play catch too.<br />
<br />
Well as you can see October has been awesome so far and Halloween is right around the corner so we are very excited for that too.</div>

<br />
I am not 100% sure if this is an annual tradition yet, but it is beginning to feel like one. This past weekend we headed down to St George with the car packed, bikes on the back and kids nestled away inside for a quick cousins weekend in sunny St George, Utah. <br />
<br />
We left Thursday night but were not able to get on the road until about 7:30 pm since we had to wait for Adyson to finish her dance classes in Orem. I came home from work and Hailey had all the bags packed, art project in the car and movies loaded up. She sure knows how to make the drive a bit easier! I loaded the bags in, put the bikes on the tow rack and we were off.<br />
<br />
Grandma and Grandpa Kandell were already down in <a href="http://www.sgcity.org/" target="_blank">St George</a> and the Lovell cousins drove down Thursday night also. As we were leaving there were reports of snow coming in and frost warnings so we were really excited to get down to the southern desert of Utah. The kids did really good and Hailey and I laughed a bit as we watched Max struggle for about 30 mins in and out of sleep and you know how a kid will nod off the feel as though he was falling or something. Hailey eventually climbed back there and helped him get situated so that he would quit falling onto Adyson.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/hgalWz5GlXo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
We got into St George around 11:45 or so and the kids of course went straight to bed. Lucy actually slept quite a bit of the way down. The next morning the kids of course got up early and went right to playing. It is so much fun to see them playing together and talking and carrying on. Bike riding around the block is like the pinnacle of fun for the Kandell kids since we do not really live in a normal neighborhood. So the kids were on bikes all the time. The first morning there it is a tradition for Grandma Sue to get on her bike and ride to the local Mcdonalds where she is a kind of celebrity and to have all the kids on bikes riding along with her. Other fun things included lizard hunting, making hotels and houses out of cardboard boxes and clothes pin people, Halloween cookies and art, BYU football and of course the main reason for the trip is the Santa Clara parade and the <a href="https://www.tuacahn.org/" target="_blank">Tuacahn</a> play of Mary Poppins.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">spooky Halloween masks and bike rides around the neighborhood made for a good time</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My mom and Hailey took just the oldest two cousins to see the play on Saturday night and they said it is absolutely the best play they have seen there and every year it seems to get better and better. Adyson and Easton thought it was awesome and the boy in the play actually goes to Ady's school so she thought that was great. <br />
<br />
We also attend each year with all the kids, the Santa Clara parade and it is such a good parade. We had the best spot this year and had shade and not tons of other kids trying to get our kid's candy. Max cleaned house and was relentless enough that we had to slow him down a bit. <br />

<br />
Last Monday, Sept 16, we had a great night out with Nate Burt and his wife and kids. We rented a side by side ATV and headed up American Fork Canyon to Tibble Fork and then made our way to a small mountain lake called Salamander Lake. <br />
<br />
Here is a cute video I took after we came home and put the salamanders in an aquarium we had in the garage. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/uRAsUgh3yGo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Believe it or not these little guys are still alive a week or more later!<br />
<br />
We had a blast doing this and had to take about a 45 minute ATV ride from the parking lot at Tibble Fork all the way up some pretty treacherous terrain. If you are not currently aware, Adyson has inherited my ability to worry or have anxiety so she was white knuckled part of the time because we literally were right near sheer cliffs on the way up!<br />
<br />
Part of the way up we had to do some pretty legit rock crawling that made the entire ATV lean way sideways etc and even had to maneuver through some deep mud puddles to where water was getting into the floor areas. It was a great adventure getting up there.<br />
<br />

Once you get up to the top you see this beautiful mountain lake. It really is amazing to come out of the trees to see this.<br />

It started to cool off once the sun was setting so we had a quick picnic with subway sandwiches and then loaded up and headed back down. I am sure we will be back next spring first thing and a handful of times next summer. We are so glad we got up there before winter hit us. <br />

Max and I attended our 3rd annual fathers and sons camp out this past weekend and had a blast as always. I seriously think Max looks forward to this overnight trip as much as anything! For those of you not familiar with the Fathers and Sons, it is a camp out that most <a href="http://www.lds.org/" target="_blank">LDS</a> (Mormon) congregations do once a year and is sort of a tradition to get all the boys and their dads out for a night in the wilderness. It is an awesome chance to bond with your son(s) and others in the neighborhood (ward). <br />

<br />
We did end up sleeping in a tent though I had some doubts early on due to the rainy weather we had been having. I went as far to suggest on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/erickandell" target="_blank">facebook</a> wall that I may need to rent a pop up trailer and immediately got called out, so my pride kicked in and I went 100% tent. The good news was that it only rained for about 5 mins around 3 am or so and we stayed completely dry.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Max insisted on helping me cook, but would not dare eat the squash. I love that he enjoyed cooking so much with me. As will all camp outs, I spent tons of time cooking and was known amongst the fathers as chef Kandell. We had dutch oven chicken, steak, veggies. We did hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls then roasted over the fire that my mother in law Stacy Smoot taught me to make. Max wanted to do nothing more than roast startbursts over the fire and he went through an entire bag on his own. He even had them for breakfast saturday morning.<br />

<br />
The best thing we men love about camping is none other than FIRE! I was known as a pyro growing up and am glad to say Max got every bit of that. As soon as it was dark outside the fires were glowing and Max was jumping from one fire to the next trying to burn anything he could. I actually witnessed him take a napkin off the lap of a guy he did not even know and attempt to throw it in the fire while this man was roasting a hot dog. I stopped him just in time and made him apologize, but it was as if he just saw the first burnable thing and grabbed it. Crazy!<br />

Max said he was going to stay up the entire night but at about 11pm or so he was ready to head to bed. We were able to just barely fit two air mattresses in our little tent and we fell asleep really fast.<br />

So in the morning there was breakfast provided and it was sausage, bacon and pancake ice cream sundaes. Max loaded up on chocolate syrup and a huge pancake and thought it was the best breakfast ever, well other than the fire melted starburst that is.<br />
<br />
In the morning I picked up camp and he played with other kids and we took off just before noon. I had a blast and really feel I should do more of this camping stuff with Max and even get the ladies out there next time. Cannot wait for the next year's Father and Sons!<br />

This past weekend was a great weekend in our family! Our oldest daughter, Adyson got baptized. In our religion you cannot be baptized until the age of 8 or after and the baptism is done by immersion. We were so proud that Ady not only understood why she should be baptized, but that she chose to do it also.<br />

It was very special for me to be able to baptize her and also give her a blessing while confirming her a member of the <a href="http://www.lds.org/?lang=eng" target="_blank">Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints</a>. Hailey had Ady all dressed in the cutest white dress and she wore a floral crown and just looked like a little Angel that morning. <br />

<br />
Back tracking a little bit, Friday night before the Saturday baptism Hailey had planned a very nice dinner at the Joseph Smith building in Salt Lake where she had invited all her brothers and sisters and her parents and my parents and my sister and her husband. Ady's great grandma Smoot came as did her oldest cousin Easton Lovell (Steve and Lisa's son who was baptized too a few months ago.) Our great friend Bandele also attended. It was such a nice dinner and a great tradition that Hailey has started. The point of the dinner is to make Ady (or whoever is getting baptized) to feel special and "older" and to have all those in attendance who would like, to share their feelings about her or baptism etc. The food was really good but honestly it was being with family that I think means the most.<br />

<br />
So Saturday was the baptism down at our church and we were blessed to have tons of family and friends come and join us. After the baptism, we went back to our house for a backyard picnic to hang out. My parents flew in from Ohio which was a special event for Ady and she is so special that even Grandpa Jim made the trek out! I hope I do not miss anyone, but here is a list of all those who attended:<br />
Ady's immediate family<br />
Shane and Stacy Smoot and all their kids<br />
Great Grandma Hatch and Great Grandma Smoot<br />
Jim and Sue Kandell<br />
The Lovell family<br />
Desatoff family<br />
Kesler Family<br />
Bandele<br />
Skinrood Family<br />
Tornow Family<br />
Beafus Family<br />
Bandele<br />
Mabs and her mom and sister<br />
<br />
We had a pretty white cake with butterflies and some other really good food to enjoy with each other. The kids ran all over the outside of the house and the adults kind of chilled if you will in side and it was a very nice day to be with friends and family for sure. As always a special thanks to Hailey for making such a special day more special by taking the time to do so many little things that make the day much more meaningful. What a great day!<br />

<br />
As parents we hope that Ady will always remember this very special day. We thank all of our friends and family that came to make it even more special. She was given a baptism journal that so many people left kind words and thoughts in. We are very proud of you Ady and love you very much. <br />
Love Mom and Dad.<br />

Monday the 26th of August was back to school for Adyson and Max and a first day of school for little Lucy. We had a wonderful summer, but truth be told Mom (Hailey) was counting down the days until the kids were back to "schedules, routines and some order!" Well here we are back in full swing. This year Adyson is a second grader, Max enters first grade and Lucy goes to half day pre-school for 3 days a week.<br />

<br />
Adyson is 8 yrs old and is getting baptized this Saturday. We are so happy that she has made the choice to do this and cannot wait. The Kandell Grandparents flew into town to join us and all the Smoot Grandparents and Great Grandma Smoot are all coming to support her too. She was so excited for her first day of school. The best thing about the first day according to her was that she gets to do homework this year on a computer. She was a bit bummed that her friend Emmy was not in her class but she does get to see her at lunch and recess. Oh, she also said the PE is the best part of school! I am just glad they still have PE.<br />
<br />
Max is 6 and still a ball full of craziness. We sure love this guy but two days in and I think he may already be "marked" as someone to keep your eyes on as far as the teachers are concerned. We shall see. There is a special place in my heart for a son like that. I think I was always watched just a little closer shall we say. Max has excelled in school and I cannot wait to see how much he learns this year! When he gets older he may not like that I posted this on the blog, but I will share it anyway as a great memory. Max just barely or should I say I just barely found or made the time (my guilt set in) to help Max learn to ride his bike! Ya I know, sad right, well he is great at swimming, has picked up tennis very easily and we even started golfing this year, but he had not been given the support needed to ride a bike. Well I had promised my mom, Grandma Sue he would have it down the next time she came out here so Tues night I made the time and within 15 mins he was impressing me! Now this is all he wants to do. Good job max.<br />

Lucy could not have looked any cuter on her first day of school. She wanted nothing more than to put on her uniform and be like Ady and Max. I cannot wait to sneak over to her school one day and watch from the two way mirror and just see how she interacts with all the other kids. There is no doubt Lucy will be a great addition to the class. I too cannot wait to see how she goes about learning this year. Very exciting.<br />

Can you believe it? As I was watching Adyson get all ready for school this morning I told her that Mommy and I had been married for 9 years and that that was longer than Ady had been alive. She smiled and watched me give Hailey a hug and kiss and went on with her morning, however it was crazy to me to think that we have been married that long and in that time how much has been accomplished through our marriage.<br />

<br />
<br />
There are too many great things to list them all but the most important to me are:<br />
<ol>
<li>3 absolutely wonderful children who though they stress us out a lot, bless our lives more than any worldly possession or thing.</li>
<li>A home that is safe and peaceful (most of the times) that can shelter and protect us from the outside world at times</li>
<li>Amazing in laws from both sides that have added to our memories and friendships. Nieces and nephews and more coming now from Hailey's side.</li>
<li>Great friends, wow we have great friends</li>
<li>We have been able to visit some very cool and fun places</li>
<li>learning to be patient, understanding and committed.</li>
<li>The family garden that many do not know, that Hailey actually started years ago and has become something we all look forward to.</li>
</ol>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">heading out for a lazy morning stroll in Vancouver</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Anyhow, I could name many more but those seemed to have come to mind quickly. So this past weekend Hailey and I took a few days alone and visited Vancouver, BC and it was amazing! We loved it and had such a great time. The reason for going of course was our Anniversary and the best thing about it was that we just got to spend time doing what we wanted to do, when we wanted to do it. So what did we do? We ate, slept in, watched movies in bed, ate, slept, walked the city, ............................. You get the point, we did was parents of 3 normally cannot do on vacation and that is whatever the Heck we wanted to do. One morning we literally woke up at like 9, got breakfast, came back and watched a movie and fell back asleep, we then got up and went to some food carts for lunch, walked a mile or so (ya that was my fault, we ended up walking down the side of a freeway into nowhere) then came back, watched more TV or a movie, had dinner and dessert and then bed and movie. Sound boring to you? Then you do not have 3 or more kids under 10 at home. We loved it. <br />
<br />
We loved just spending time together and not having to worry about much of anything. You see, after 9 years of marriage I have come to realize, there are always worries. Not that my entire life is spent worrying, but you worry about kids, about work, about your spouse, etc. It was just good to let that all go for a few days. <br />
<br />
Some other highlights or our Vancouver trip were::<br />
<ul>
<li>Hawksworth Restraunt</li>
<li>China Town Night Market (for me at least)</li>
<li>Food Carts</li>
<li>Horse pulled carriage ride at Stanley Park</li>
<li>The Granville Island Public Market</li>
<li>Relaxing together </li>
</ul>

I look forward to the next 9 years too! That is a worry, you see. In 9 more years Adyson will be a senior in high school, Max a Jr and Lucy will be almost a teenager! I bet that all gets here sooner than I can expect at this point. Through all of it, I am lucky to have the support and love of my wife who I say Thank You to today and Happy Anniversary. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ady and I attended the Redhead Event in Portland and at this point we think we made the Guinness Records Book</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So on Friday this past week both Ady and I traveled to Portland, OR to try and get into the Guinness Book or World Records. We were part of the Redhead Event 2013, which was trying to gather the most natural born red heads (currently known as gingers) in one roped off area all at the same time.<br />
<br />
To be honest, the record attempt was really just an excuse to take Adyson away for a special weekend and create some good memories. I did not realize until I was in Portland just how special a weekend or even just a night really, away with just one child could have such a positive impact. We were really able to bond and have lots of fun. She thought it was awesome that I gave her a key to the room and she was the one that insisted on opening the door every time. Each time we left the room she made sure I knew she had the key in case we needed to come back and get in!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dw32hXhN_UHTLQGlTDgJ0BHzsE2by7ghlB5jeNmOVTURPsRrQh7Lsdq2CdQ9DsFhPkQ_X8T8Dn0_VsPmVBgHw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
So on Friday night after we checked into the room, we got on a bike taxi and headed out to eat some Street food. We were dropped off by a large parking lot of really nasty but tasty food carts and trucks and we first got some Mexican food. While eating, Ady pointed out a man that was eating food out of the trash can so I explained why and asked her if she wanted to give the rest of her food to him and we did. We talked about how good it made her feel. It was cool because the guy was very grateful that it was still warm and waved to us later when we saw him again. Ady smiled when she got that wave later. We also tried some Korean BBQ that was very tasty too.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ady enjoying some Mexican taquitos on the street. Portland Redhead Event 2013</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After filling up on street food we went back to the hotel and watched The Croods on tv! The funny thing is that I fell asleep during the movie only to wake up and Ady had watched the entire thing and downed an entire bag of m&ms. She was so excited to be able to stay up til Midnight and to sleep in as long as she wanted. She was telling me the entire time, "mom and I love to sleep in but Max and Lucy always wake us up." She was pumped that I said she could stay up as long as she wanted and that she could sleep in all day if she wanted. We were up before 8 am!<br />
<br />
So the next morning we got breakfast in bed and this little foodie or ours got an crab omelet! Yup I love how she enjoys eating such crazy stuff. <br />
<br />
After breakfast we checked out the Portland farmers market since we had heard such great things about it and I have to tell you that it did not disappoint. This was by far the best farmers market I had ever been to. Just walking the market you could smell fresh basil as if though it was infused in the air somehow.<br />

</tbody></table>
By about 11 am we headed over the the main square to sign in to the Redhead Event 2013 and then had some time to kill so we found this really cool candy store called <a href="http://rocketfizz.com/" target="_blank">Rocket Fizz</a>. Ady was as they say, as happy as a kid in a candy store. The great thing about Ady was that all she wanted to do was get treats for Mom, Max and Lucy.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">happy as a kid in a candy store</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now we get to the main event, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/redheadevent2013" target="_blank">Redhead Event 2013</a>. You would have to be there to believe it but over 2000 natural red heads actually showed up and at this point it does appear that Ady and I are World Record Holders. We will know for sure in about 90 days. When you get there you have to have a picture of yourself when you were under the age of 8 and this is how they verify for people like me who are no longer sporting the flaming red, that you were truly a redhead. We got official tags with our numbers on it and we were then just sitting around eating ice cream and waiting waiting waiting. The bad news is that it was about 90 degrees and hot and sunny. Nothing like 2000 gingers in the sun. There was more sunblock used in that park than anywhere else in the world that day too I bet.<br />

After the long wait they herded us all like cattle through one entrance to a roped off area and filmed each person entering one by one. I kind of felt like we were being led off to our death in some weird lets rid Portland of the red heads kind of thing. But we survived. Here is what it looked like.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Look at all the Redheads</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To end the day we met up with my cousin Jimmy Kandell and his wife and daughter over at the hotel and had some snacks and caught up. It is cool to be able to get together even if just for 30 mins with family. Ady was very polite and I hope she enjoyed that little pit stop. After seeing Jimmy, we got back to the room, packed up our one small bag and headed off to the airport.<br />
<br />
What a blast and what memories we will cherish for so long. I am so glad I had the idea to do this and even more glad that my wife, Hailey held down the fort back home. I guess I will owe her a Mom weekend away with Max soon. I wonder what they could get in the Guinness Book for? Messiest child and most stylish mom? Well, I bet most of you reading this had no idea you were friends with a couple or world record holders.<br />

Of course when me make decisions we have to deal with the consequences both good and bad. Who knows, maybe it is that summer break has been long, that school is about to start and we are just at the end of it, but it just seems like lately the kids act before thinking about the consequences.<br />
<br />
Anyway, last night Hailey and I prepare a <a href="http://www.lds.org/topics/family" target="_blank">Family Home Evening</a> about consequences. We asked the kids questions like, "if you touch fire, what will happen?" "should you be mad at the fire or at yourself?" You should have heard the answers to the second question. Obviously we explained that you know before you touch fire what will happen so if it hurts you should only be mad at yourself and not the fire.<br />
<br />
We also asked questions like, "if you are nice to so and so, how will you feel?" So we began to try and get them to realize each time they do something or act a certain way, they would have consequences. I had read a blog some time ago or maybe I saw it on facebook, but a friend from high school had her own kids come up with their consequences for not behaving etc. She said it was great because they made the list of consequences (punishments) so they could not argue when they had to face them.<br />
<br />
Not only did we do negative consequences, but we let them list or pick positive ones too! To be honest I really liked this part the best because I had no idea how excited they were when they were talking about the good things that can happen if they make good choices. Their good consequences were not full of candy or tv or things, but rather family bike rides, walks to the sno shack, and spending time with us. I loved hearing how great they said they would feel if they got MORE of that kind of stuff.<br />
<br />
So, even though I do not have lots of good pictures and fun stories today, I thought it would be good to document this new effort in the Kandell home! Make good choices, get good consequences. Make bad choices and get bad consequences. We will let you know how it goes.<br />
<br />
Ps, here is a photo capture of a facetime call Hailey had with me to let Lucy tell me she was sorry for something. I cannot remember what it was even one day later, but it was a fun call.<br />

<br />
Yesterday for something to do after church I took the kids up American Fork canyon to drive around and just figured we would see what we would see, cool plan hu? That is how dads do it! I do not need to have a set in stone plan, rather just get me out of the house and lets see what occurs.<br />
<br />
So we drove up the canyon and we pulled off at a turn out next to the gushing river (more like a fast stream this time of the year) and the kids had a blast. I love seeing how they can just invent stuff to do. Here is a list of "stuff" they started doing within minutes.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WzK7GkAGj7w/Uf_wFRrCWCI/AAAAAAAAAMM/9EsEcCJzy6I/s1600/river+up+canyon.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WzK7GkAGj7w/Uf_wFRrCWCI/AAAAAAAAAMM/9EsEcCJzy6I/s320/river+up+canyon.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ady and Lucy playing in the river</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<ol>
<li>skipping stones</li>
<li>who could make the biggest splash with rocks</li>
<li>throwing leaves (little boats I think) into the water and watching them go as far as the eye could see</li>
<li>looking for crayfish. I told them I did not think they could live in such cold water. Who knows?</li>
</ol>
We then jumped back in the car and headed further up the mountain to a place called tibble fork reservoir and it was the most beautiful site! Here is a <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=tibble+fork&client=firefox-a&hs=opQ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=5ev_UZmKKq7cigLymIGoBw&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1920&bih=977" target="_blank">link</a> to google images. <br />
<br />
There were people roasting hot dogs, fishing, swimming, relaxing and just enjoying the wonderful views. The kids wanted to get wet but I did not want them destroyed so we walked over to the stream that was filling the reservoir and they walked around finding shiny and smooth rocks and making a rock store and were "selling" rocks to each other. I never saw any real funds exchanged but I did see smiles and fun.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">collecting shiny and smooth rocks</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I was talking to a co worker who goes up there all the time and he said a 45 min 4 wheeler ride takes you to a place called <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=salamander+lake+utah&client=firefox-a&hs=8Xl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=oOz_UbPmEajDiwL0pYHoAQ&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1920&bih=977" target="_blank">Salamander Lake</a>, and that his kids caught tons of salamanders. My kids would have a hay day up there catching all those things. I think I am going to have to plan this sometime very soon!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I thought to myself yesterday that too often I am just happy to sit at home and not get out. I had truly forgotten how awesome the outdoors around here are. You end up taking it for granted when you look outside any given day and see snow capped mountains. I am going to try to really enjoy the outdoors with friends and family this fall!<br />

<br />
I have no idea why I am blogging this morning. Here I sit at work and yes things have been extremely busy the past year or two and now we have finally slowed waaaaay down. I do not want to talk about work on this blog and hope that this quick post, if nothing else will strike a new desire in both Hailey and I to begin capturing life's memories on this page.<br />
<br />
Updates? It is almost as if too much time has passed to do updates and perhaps we will just have a gap in our family history (per the family blog) or we will just be required to go to facebook, instagram, twitter etc. I was just talking to Hailey last night and her sister Christa was over and we were discussing how we will each have like 250,000 photos by the time we die and we wondered how they would all be stored or saved. With new phones etc it is as if every single moment is captured.<br />
<br />
Well I will try for some fast updates on each of us.<br />
<br />
<u>Eric (me)</u><br />
<br />
I have been working working working. That said I have been able to enjoy more time off and not be as stressed as in years passed due to some key hiring at work. We grew the office to over 130 employees at our peak and business has been great. I continue to love cooking and food and Hailey and I took a couple food trip to NYC earlier this year and had a blast just spending time away together. Oh and we ate a ton.<br />
<br />
I am loving my new found workout passion called Crossfit. I have been starting to golf weekly with Max (just 3 times so far) and hope to keep that new habit going.<br />
<br />
Hailey and I are teaching the 14-16 yr old kids at church in Sunday school.<br />
<br />
Our family garden is back and it is not too long until the kids will be selling produce at my office again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_srTuvuhSs/UfqajhXE13I/AAAAAAAAALU/gA3NEJk_dBA/s1600/kandellgardenpeas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_srTuvuhSs/UfqajhXE13I/AAAAAAAAALU/gA3NEJk_dBA/s320/kandellgardenpeas.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We spent Christmas 2012 with Grandpa and Grandma Kandell in Punta Mita, Mexico and have really fallen in love with that place.<br />
<br />
The kids are growing up so fast and I love them so much.<br />
<br />
<u>Hailey</u><br />
<br />
Well Hailey has been uber busy being a mom to 3 kids who she is running all over the place all the time. Lately we have started to feel a bit overextended with all of our commitments but we love staying busy and going going going.<br />
<br />
Hailey has continued to showcase her talent that I suppose was hidden for some time of planning and throwing little parties or shindigs (ok some may not have been little) and our kids have been very grateful for all the work she has put into their functions.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k7a0PvIKlzY/UfqbJv40r0I/AAAAAAAAALc/T3Fy7nhdBgI/s1600/haileyparty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k7a0PvIKlzY/UfqbJv40r0I/AAAAAAAAALc/T3Fy7nhdBgI/s320/haileyparty.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hailey making fresh muddled lemonade at Ady's Garden Birthday Party</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
A normal day could be something like, breakfast then Lucy off to princess camp, Max and Ady off to tennis lessons, home for lunch, Lucy naptime if lucky, Max and Ady being crazy kids (that was a nice way to say it) then Ady off to Dance class and Max to karate. Everyone home, Dad home and dinner, wind down and bed. So yes Hailey is a busy mom who cannot wait for school to start in a few weeks.<br />
<br />
One thing that Hailey really has put lots of effort into this past year is serving those in and around our neighborhood. Nothing over the top like manual labor of course (ha) but she is very kind and just seems to know when someone is needing a little help and will drop off some bread, lemonade, cookies or a card etc. <br />
<br />
<u>Adyson </u><br />
Our little Ady is not so little anymore. She turned 8 and gets baptized very soon! We cannot wait. I will tell you that Ady has become an excellent dancer this past year that we have been off the blog grid and it is due to nothing short of her extreme hard work and dedication. I have asked her many times when mom is not around if she likes it because I get worried she goes too much, and she loves it and all her best friends dance with her so it is a great thing for her.<br />
<br />
Ady did awesome in school this past year and got some great awards for academic achievements at the end of the year too! We are very proud of how much she tries and studies at school. <br />
<br />
Ady loves cooking with her dad. If I am ever in the kitchen she tries to be right by my side and I love it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IUqyaFAEVg8/UfqbgW86PkI/AAAAAAAAALk/iLt_vRS3GAM/s1600/adyfishing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IUqyaFAEVg8/UfqbgW86PkI/AAAAAAAAALk/iLt_vRS3GAM/s400/adyfishing.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Ady's highlight of the summer if you had to ask her was going to Ohio for 2 full weeks to be with the Kandell Grandparents. Well to be fair, she loved spending a few days at the Smoot cabin too because she has become a fishing expert and seriously according to her has a magic fishing rod that always catches fish!<br />
<br />
<br />
<u>Max</u><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YKLWrku4M5o/Ufqbv7sHmII/AAAAAAAAALs/qu5tdsx5QbQ/s1600/maxslipnslide.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YKLWrku4M5o/Ufqbv7sHmII/AAAAAAAAALs/qu5tdsx5QbQ/s640/maxslipnslide.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Doing all things boy!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Wow is all I can say about Max. Dirty or messy may be the other two words. It does not matter what we dress this guy in he will ruin it or at least trash it! Max did AWESOME in school and we are so proud of him and cannot believe he will be in first grade in a few weeks. Max is in both karate and jiu jitsu so watch out! He is still our mini Michael Phelps in the pool too. We love Max so much and he just lost his first tooth a week ago. He actually pulled it out himself at church!<br />
<br />
<br />
<u>Lucy</u><br />
Ok so Lucy is just a ball full of energy, joy and talk talk talk. Hailey says since she is the youngest she has picked up so much more vocabulary from being with her brother and sister all day long. I love hearing her try to reason and speak about basically everything. She started dance recently and looks up to Ady for sure. If it has to do with Princesses then Lucy is going to be interested. She will start pre K this year and is really excited to get to go to school where Max and Ady go. In addition to princesses, if you can eat it, Lucy will for sure eat it! She loves to eat. A friend pointed out that most pictures we post of Lucy, she can be found with food in her mouth. It is true. Just watch.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jc5BopeJntc/UfqcOInGQmI/AAAAAAAAAL0/NOfii8PcxRI/s1600/lucyberries.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jc5BopeJntc/UfqcOInGQmI/AAAAAAAAAL0/NOfii8PcxRI/s400/lucyberries.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">That was my first ripe tomato and she ate it!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
So hopefully this is a good catch up post and hopefully both Hailey and I will do better at blogging now. <br />

(annual Easter Sunday best, 2012, Palo Alto)<br />
<br />
For Spring Break of sorts my entire family headed for San Francisco/Palo Alto (where we lived for awhile about 12 years ago)<br />
It was a great 5 days of fun and all our old fav restaurants, beach spots, and memories from our life there.<br />
<br />
We started the trip with 2 days in San Francisco<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291228412/" title="photo-103 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-103" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7219/7291228412_1b67da8c64_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Visiting golden gate park and walking the bridge<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291228540/" title="photo-102 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-102" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7077/7291228540_1c7e11ae34_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
And Eric's favorite San Fran spot, the Ferry Farmers Market. And all its divine samplings and yummy gourmet food shops. OUr kids favorite was the spot where they make all kids of grilled cheese sandwiches. Eric loved the oyster shooter bar when you picked your oyster and toppings.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291228016/" title="photo-104 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-104" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7211/7291228016_7b7f4a6cc0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291227540/" title="photo-106 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-106" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7105/7291227540_0657f5398e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Union Square Park, Max kept feeling jipped. He said every park we went to "where are the swings? slides?" San Fran is not exactly full of playground parks.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291227366/" title="photo-107 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-107" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7235/7291227366_3055e55a0d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The kids loved the Pier and Fisherman's Wharf, fun carnival food, games, and cool shops. Must more their flavor.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291226868/" title="photo-109 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-109" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7074/7291226868_b5ac9a5218_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<br />
Lucy loves her uncle Spencer, and she loves carousels maybe even a little more.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291226466/" title="photo-111 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-111" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8004/7291226466_b728d21204_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> <br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
We had the best dinner down on the Wharf at Scoma's, delicious seafood. Ady even did her first oyster shooter. Then we followed that up by dessert at Ghiradelli Square. Yum.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<br />
When we lived in California, our very favorite beach to go to as a family was San Gregario. It always had tons of logs, we would build beach forts, and chase he tide into caves. And catch teeny sand crabs. We did all those things again. My kids loved it.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291225268/" title="photo-116 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-116" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7231/7291225268_373b1790dc_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Our try at a beach family portrait, I don't remember who took this pic but we had no warning we were about to get washed away.<br />

<br />
During naps one day Spencer and I hit the San Fran shopping scene. Hard.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291225438/" title="photo-115 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-115" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8153/7291225438_0d094dbe48_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
After 2 days in the city we headed down for 2 nights in Palo Alto, the town we lived in. And it is as wonderful as I remember.<br />
We visited out old home, and even found remnants of a treehouse we built there. My kids loved running around the gorgeous yard and we loved having all our great memories come flooding back.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291222596/" title="photo-125 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-125" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8149/7291222596_a51db91a44_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291222770/" title="photo-124 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-124" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8014/7291222770_acb6dd7cff_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291221624/" title="photo-130 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-130" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7096/7291221624_91c8fca5d9_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Easter morning on Sunday proved a little tricky as we were in a hotel. But we worked it out, egg hunt on the gorgeous hotel grounds, baskets hidden in my brother and parents rooms, and the easter bunny himself even showed up for the hotels brunch. Our kids were happy.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291222936/" title="photo-123 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-123" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8161/7291222936_45ba63a822_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291223110/" title="photo-122 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-122" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7101/7291223110_b5e136259b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291222404/" title="photo-126 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-126" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7082/7291222404_a6cdcb99ff_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Then we headed off for church at our old Palo Alto ward. Good to see old faces, and places.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7291221238/" title="photo-131 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-131" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/7291221238_d20cf5a371_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The kids enjoyed themselves so much we practically had to drag them home. Maybe thats cuz our flight got in after midnight back to Utah. Oy. It was a exhausting trips, as are all trips with kids but lots of great memories were made.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My Mother Day was full of this</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Delish summer BBQ prepared by my husband for my entire family</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kids singing their primary Mothers Day songs to me up on the stand</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A Sunday nap, well IM not good at napping BUT I did lay on my bed and Watch Law and Order and thats even better to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My family coming to my house for our Mothers Day casual outdoor feast</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gifts, cards, hugs, handmade love by my kids</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Birthday desert for me and my little brother Spencer, we share a birthday week.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was great.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Although I think after birthday week and Mother's Day, my husband is burnt out on celebrating me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You should have seen the look on his face when we got home from Vegas and I asked if I got to sleep in the next morning (Mothers Day). 2 sleep in days in one week was not working for him.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7229294222/" title="photo-94 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-94" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5200/7229294222_ae076462b7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<br />
And I would be lame to not mention, in a post about Mothers Day my gratitude for my own mother. You gave me and all her kids everything she has and is. She's a wonderful example who Id be wise to follow. And all the other wonderful mothers in my life, including my mother in law, the mothers who are in my kids lives, my friends who are great examples of selfless, loving mothering. For my sweet babysitters Brooke and Jenny who "mother" my kids when I am not there.<br />
I love you all.</div>Hailey Smoot Kandellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11859198270878255098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4643305256612697563.post-63177326701452065082012-05-18T12:43:00.000-07:002012-05-18T12:43:03.450-07:00Birthday Sleepover<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7222916674/" title="photo-74 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-74" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7238/7222916674_f851351097_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm a lucky girl this year, my birthday May 9th landed in the middle of the week so I felt celebrated all week long. Dinner with girlfriends, lunches, park playdates, sweet gifts and notes. I'm very blessed to have such wonderful people around me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My husband knowing, my birthday weekend always falls around Mothers Day, knew I wouldn't want to be away from the tots on Sunday so he took me to a fun Vegas overnighter Friday night. We flew down mid-day with these 2 wonderfuls (pictured below, Jodee and Rob)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and we had a great old time. We stayed at the Cosmopolitan again, my new Vegas favorite. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7222915532/" title="photo-89 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-89" height="578" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5328/7222915532_705f4dc3fd_z.jpg" width="510" /></a>

<div style="text-align: center;">
(love any reason for Vegas jewels) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We did all my favorite Vegas things Early tapas pre-dinner at Jaleo, followed by excellent seats to Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian (did you know its ending there in Sept, so hurry and go!!) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7222917108/" title="photo-72 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-72" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7075/7222917108_c7eda9eb63_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got to sport my new gorgeous clutch from Lindsey, Jodee and Court all night.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7222916322/" title="photo-77 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-77" height="320" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7239/7222916322_9093834f91_n.jpg" width="320" /></a>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then after Phantom we hit up a new sushi spot at the Cosmo Blue Ribbon Sushi, I thinkit was good, nothing incredible except the toro.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my mind Sushi Samba and Nobu jut cant be competed with. They are too amazing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But it always fun to try a new place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7222916260/" title="photo-78 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-78" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8026/7222916260_295ab40849_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Saturday, we shopped (Eric did even a teeny bit, his eyes were glazed over at Saks for the entire 15 mins, but progress is progress. He's wonderful. I got to hit the oxygen bar, which is my favorite for the Vegas headache I always get from second hand smoke (ew people) Then Jodee and I got massages at the Cosmo spa which was delightful.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we hopped on the plane back home and were home in time to kiss our kids and tuck them in and be in there in the morning for Mother Day. A perfect weekend.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let me first start of this post by making 2 points.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Lucy's name is not Lucille. I get asked all the time since its her "in trouble" name</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. the photo above might be my favorite photo of my kids. ever.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I thought to get back to blogging, I better start with a post of something I am excited about. And there is not much that gets me more excited than my youngest little chickadee. And use the word "little" fairly loosely, as there is not much "little" about our Lucy Lu.. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She is big talkin, big tricks, big thighs, big smile, big personality.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we love her so much.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since she has changed so much over the past little while, I thought I'd document some Lucy-isms.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lucy has no "off button" she pops right up every morning and is pumped about it, and hits the ground running. Always wakes up with smiles and animated greetings for the rest of her family who prefer to wander around in sleepy silence for the first 15-30 mins of the day.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207090302/" title="photo-56 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-56" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7086/7207090302_f7335027b5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you pull out your phone, a ipad, a camera, or anything that even remotely looks like one of these things, she immediately poses and says "chee chee cheese"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Speaking of cheese. Chuck-e-cheese. Its her favorite. Favorite word to say. Favorite place to talk about. She has only been once but it made quite an impact.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207088924/" title="photo-67 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-67" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8017/7207088924_c39c40cc4e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She has the best bikini bod for miles. And cant get enough pool time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Obsessed with those cheeks. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207089022/" title="photo-66 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-66" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7212/7207089022_ec275d3532_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207089692/" title="photo-60 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-60" height="640" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8156/7207089692_3cdce9431b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And this one is for Grandpa Jim Kandell, we are bathing Ohio-style these days. In the pool.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207089532/" title="photo-61 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="photo-61" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7097/7207089532_43dc1832cf_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She is obsessed with Elmo and Elmo's World. Frequently she is yell-singing at the top of her lungs "Dats Elmo's Werld"and when I got her these sesame street "elmo/zoey" shoes she insisted she even sleep with them. and I love her for being this excited about a pair of shoes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/7207090422/" title="elmoshoe by hkandell, on Flickr"><img alt="elmoshoe" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7243/7207090422_e96fd8b563_z.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This photo is of Lucy visiting her babysitter Brookey after Brooke got her tonsils out earlier this month. When we got to her house, Lucy walked right over to Brooke's bed, lifted the covers and climbed into bed with her. Brooke was immediately healed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

When Lucy was about 9 months old, we started calling her mischievious alter-ego "Gemma" when she was making messes or being crazy, the kids and I would say "its not Lucy, its Gemma" or "uh oh Gemma is here" These days I'd say most days are Gemma days, so much so that we've given up on it being her alter-ego and just embraced Lucy's true busy-body self.</div>

With Ady and Max in school, dance, soccer, swim etc. I get plenty of alone time with Lucy. I am loving having this special time with her. We have our own adventures, visits to Grandma Meema's, shopping trips. park visits, and cartoon in mommy's bed mornings.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Its the best time. Her happy little spirit just makes my day better.</div>

{mothers day 2012}</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thus far 2012 has been a bust for me documenting the comings and goings of my ever busy and growing up to fast family. I was too hung up on getting caught up on past things I had missed. So scratch that, Im just gonna start fresh, if I make up some old posts, great. If not, Oh freakin well. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here we are starting fresh. Does everyone look old? Including me? I had a birthday last week, creeping closer and closer to 30 and I hate it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, hopefully this post isn't another empty promise. Even if no one reads this blog, I am coming back for the sake of documenting the people I love.</div>

And as like all vacations since Christmas, Ady's doll Millie was joining us.</div><div style="text-align: center;">(as seen below, </div><div style="text-align: center;">and dont you dare think we bought Millie her own seat on the plane, we just got lucky)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/6962593171/" title="photo-239 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7052/6962593171_aebee6bbe3_z.jpg" width="640" height="640" alt="photo-239" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/6816474734/" title="photo-238 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7058/6816474734_c872d7b364.jpg" width="429" height="429" alt="photo-238" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Eric refused to miss even an hour of work, so Ady, Milllie and I flew out to Chicago earlier in the day and Eric planned to meet us that night.</div><div style="text-align: center;">We walked around the city, ordered room service, planned our itinerary and tried to stay up to see daddy before bedtime.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55441429@N02/6816475012/" title="photo-241 by hkandell, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7207/6816475012_dac8aa2b53_z.jpg" width="640" height="640" alt="photo-241" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">We loved every minute of our time in Chicago.
